The American Meat Institute since 1989 has had a formal partnership called “Meating the Need” with Feeding America (formerly America’s Second Harvest). Through this program, companies donate surplus products to food banks in the Feeding America network. Feeding America provides food to many smaller food pantries and homeless shelters who, in turn, provide vital services to hungry people nationwide. Since 1989, AMI members have donated in excess of 10 million pounds of surplus meat and poultry products to food banks in the Feeding America Network. Meat is the most desired and least available product in food banks. AMI member support has been critical over the last 20 years.
